Udyam is the government's formal MSME classification registration. On its own, it doesn't let you sell anything — but once linked correctly to your GeM seller profile, it unlocks meaningful benefits: purchase preference consideration and, in many cases, exemption from EMD/caution money deposits that non-MSME sellers would otherwise need to pay.

The catch is that this linkage has to be done correctly. A mismatch between your Udyam registration details and your GeM profile is one of the most common reasons EMD exemption claims get rejected, forcing sellers to either fix the mismatch or pay deposits they should have been exempt from.
