The short answer

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is the electronic equivalent of a signature, issued under the Information Technology Act, 2000 by Certifying Authorities licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities. Class 3 DSCs are used for MCA filings, GST, income tax, DGFT and e-tenders. You apply online with Aadhaar or PAN-based verification and receive it on a secure USB token.

Validity and renewal

A DSC is valid for one to three years as chosen. Renewal is effectively a fresh issuance with verification. Keep the token and password secure, since the DSC is legally equivalent to your signature.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign national get an Indian DSC?

Yes. Foreign nationals can obtain DSCs using passport and address proof, with notarised or apostilled documents as required by the Certifying Authority.

Can one DSC be used on multiple portals?

Yes. The same Class 3 DSC can be registered and used on MCA, GST, income tax and other portals, as long as the name matches the records on each portal.

What if I lose my DSC token?

Request the Certifying Authority to revoke the certificate and apply for a new one. Revocation prevents misuse of the lost token.

Is a DSC required for GST for a proprietor?

No. Proprietors and partnerships can use EVC (OTP-based verification) for GST. A DSC is mandatory for companies and LLPs.
