The short answer

The ISI mark is BIS's product certification mark under Scheme I of the BIS Act, 2016. It is mandatory for products covered by Quality Control Orders, such as cement, steel, toys, pressure cookers and many appliances. Manufacturers apply to BIS, undergo factory inspection and sample testing, and on grant pay a marking fee to use the ISI mark with the licence number.
