The short answer

Marriages in India can be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 (for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs, after a religious ceremony) or under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 (for any couple, including interfaith, with a 30-day public notice).
