The short answer

Under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Legal Metrology (Approval of Models) Rules, 2011, every model of weight, measure or weighing or measuring instrument must be approved by the Director of Legal Metrology before manufacture or import. Samples are tested at government-approved laboratories, and on approval a certificate and approval mark are issued for use on instruments.
