A Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) is a 10-character number required by anyone who deducts or collects tax at source. It is applied for online in Form 49B, and must be quoted in TDS and TCS returns, challans and certificates. Failing to obtain TAN when required attracts a penalty of Rs 10,000.
