The short answer

To register a partnership firm, choose a name, draft and sign the partnership deed on stamp paper as per state law, obtain the firm's PAN, file the application (Form 1 or the state form) with the Registrar of Firms along with the deed and partner KYC, pay the fee, and collect the registration certificate once the firm is entered in the register.

Step 1: Choose the firm name

Pick a name not identical to an existing firm in the state and not implying government approval, such as Crown, Emperor or Imperial, without consent.

Step 2: Draft and execute the deed

Cover capital, profit ratio, remuneration and interest, admission and retirement, and dispute resolution. Print on stamp paper of the value required in your state, sign with witnesses, and notarise where required.

Step 3: Apply for firm PAN

Apply online with the executed deed. The PAN is needed for the bank account, GST and tax filings.

The Registrar scrutinises the documents and records the firm in the Register of Firms. A certificate of registration is issued, often within a few weeks depending on the state.

Frequently asked questions

Can I register a partnership firm online?

Many states, including Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka and Telangana, allow online applications. Some still require physical submission or verification. The procedure follows your state's Registrar of Firms rules.

Is notarisation of the deed required?

Notarisation is not required by the Partnership Act itself, but many states and banks ask for a notarised deed. Stamping as per state law is essential for the deed to be admissible.

Can a firm register after years of operation?

Yes. Registration can be applied for at any time. Registering earlier protects the firm's right to sue third parties under Section 69.

Who signs the registration application?

All partners, or their authorised agents, sign the application and verify the particulars as required under the Act and state rules.
