Frequently asked questions
Is a rent agreement mandatory for GST registration?
Only if the business premises are rented. The rent agreement is uploaded along with an ownership proof of the landlord, such as an electricity bill or property tax receipt. For owned premises, an ownership document is sufficient.
Can I use a NOC instead of a rent agreement?
Yes, where premises belong to a relative or friend and no rent is paid, a consent letter or NOC from the owner, with their ID and an ownership document, is commonly accepted as proof of the place of business.
Are documents in regional languages accepted?
Documents issued in regional languages, such as property tax receipts, are generally accepted, though an officer may ask for a translation if the document is unclear. Clear, legible uploads avoid most queries.
What size should uploaded documents be?
The GST portal accepts PDF and JPEG files within set size limits, typically around 1 MB per document and a smaller limit for photographs. Compress scans while keeping them legible before uploading.
