GST applications are most often rejected because the address proof does not match the declared address, the rent agreement lacks an owner document, Aadhaar authentication is skipped, HSN or SAC codes are wrong, or queries are not answered in time. Getting these right usually means approval within about a week.
Mistake: address details that do not match
Officers compare the typed address with the uploaded proof word by word. Even a missing floor number or different locality name can trigger a query. Copy the address exactly as it appears on the proof.
Mistake: wrong HSN or SAC codes
Codes should reflect what you actually sell. Choosing codes for unrelated or high-risk goods invites scrutiny, and wrong codes later cause invoicing and rate errors.
Mistake: registering too late
Registration must be applied for within 30 days of becoming liable. Collecting tax without registration is not allowed, and supplies made while liable but unregistered can attract tax, interest and penalty.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have two GST registrations in the same state?
Yes. A business can obtain separate registrations for different places of business or business verticals within the same state, but it is optional. Most small businesses add additional places to one registration instead.
Is GST registration required for freelancers?
Freelancers supplying services need GST registration once their aggregate turnover exceeds Rs 20 lakh (Rs 10 lakh in certain special category states). Those exporting services may also register to claim refunds, though exports themselves are zero-rated.
Can I cancel GST registration if my business closes?
Yes. File an application for cancellation in REG-16 on the portal, stating the reason. After cancellation you must file a final return in GSTR-10 within three months, reporting stock and any tax payable.
Is a PAN mandatory for GST registration?
Yes, for all regular taxpayers. GST registration is PAN-based, and the GSTIN embeds the PAN. Only certain categories, such as non-resident taxable persons and entities deducting tax at source, can register with other identifiers.
Can I sell on Amazon or Flipkart without GST?
Sellers of goods through e-commerce operators generally must register for GST regardless of turnover. Relief has been provided for certain small sellers making only intra-state supplies through e-commerce under specified conditions, so check your eligibility before listing.
