The short answer

To apply for GST registration, fill Part A on gst.gov.in with PAN, email and mobile to get a TRN, complete Part B with business, promoter, address, HSN or SAC and bank details, upload documents, complete Aadhaar authentication, and submit with DSC or EVC to get an ARN. The certificate REG-06 is issued on approval.

Step 1: Part A and the TRN

On the GST portal choose Services, Registration, New Registration. Select taxpayer type and state, and enter the legal name as per PAN, PAN itself, email and mobile. Verify both with OTPs to receive a Temporary Reference Number, valid for 15 days to complete Part B.

Step 2: Complete Part B

  1. Business details: trade name, constitution, date of commencement and reason for registration.
  2. Promoters or partners: identity, address and photographs.
  3. Authorised signatory: with authorisation letter or resolution.
  4. Principal place of business: address, nature of possession and proof.
  5. Goods and services: top HSN or SAC codes.
  6. Bank account: can be added after registration if not available.

Step 3: Aadhaar authentication

Opt for Aadhaar authentication for the promoters and authorised signatory. An OTP-based authentication link is sent to each person. In several states, applicants are asked to complete biometric authentication and document verification at a GST Suvidha Kendra, with an appointment booked through the portal.

Step 4: Submit and receive the ARN

Verify the application with a DSC (mandatory for companies and LLPs) or EVC and submit. An ARN is generated and emailed, which is used to track status.

Step 5: Respond to officer queries

If the officer needs clarification, a notice in REG-03 is issued. Reply in REG-04 with the explanation or documents within the time allowed. Unanswered queries lead to rejection in REG-05.

Step 6: Download the certificate

Once approved, the GSTIN and certificate REG-06 are available on the portal dashboard. Display the certificate at the place of business and put the GSTIN on invoices.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the GST TRN valid?

The Temporary Reference Number generated after Part A is valid for 15 days. Part B must be completed and submitted within that period, or a fresh Part A application is needed.

Is a DSC mandatory for GST registration?

A DSC is mandatory for companies and LLPs. Proprietors, partnership firms and others can submit using EVC, which uses an OTP sent to the authorised signatory's registered mobile number.

What happens if I do not complete Aadhaar authentication?

Without successful Aadhaar authentication, the application can be taken up for physical verification of the place of business, and the time for approval can extend up to 30 days.

Can I apply for GST without a bank account?

Yes. Bank account details can be added after registration through a non-core amendment, typically within a set period after the GSTIN is granted or before filing returns.
